Rosa lives in the city of Cusco, Peru. She is 40 and has four children, one of whom is living independently (Jorge, who is 22). The other three (Benito, 25; Mari Luz, 12; and Catherine, 6) still depend on their mother financially. Rosa balances her work at home with the operation of her small furniture-making workshop. Rosa tells us that she currently employs three people building furniture. She is both mother and father to her children, and is a member of the “Yanapakuy” Communal Bank, part of Asociación Arariwa. The word "yanapakuy" comes from the Quechua language and means "Let's help". She needs a loan of 600 dollars to invest in materials such as wood, paint thinner, and lacquer.
